Feel free to take a look at our current plan for this special occasion. We'll be updating it over the next two years as we get closer to 2028. We'd love your input – please reach out to your Puna Executives, who meet regularly with the Auckland Committee throughout the year. We invite you to watch the video explanation of our plan. We've designed this plan with our families in mind – keeping costs low for everyone, putting our youth at the heart of our celebrations, and making sure we all stay connected to our language, culture, and history
Sharing a meal is at the heart of our families, and feeding our people is a shared responsibility.
To feed everyone across the three and a half days (based on 600 attendees), the total cost is around $161.25 per person. Please don't worry—this is not a fee we are asking you to pay individually. It is simply the actual cost of catering and supplies, which we are covering through a targeted registration fee, puna/kopu contributions, and in-kind support and sponsorship.
A full day of catering costs around $40 per person (morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner). Costs may shift slightly with final numbers and food prices, so we need to prepare well in advance. This mixed approach eases the burden on individual families, and our Opening Ceremony meal will be catered at a discounted price so everyone can enjoy the event. Serving food is how we show aro'a—our families will prepare and serve most of the kai, a wonderful chance to connect and enjoy this journey together.
To bring our 50th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion to life for 600 attendees, the total estimated cost is $114,560. This covers all kai across the three and a half days ($96,750), equipment hire ($11,260), vehicle rentals ($4,400), and entertainment and activities ($2,150). Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Koru School and the Atiu Community Hall, venue hire is $0. These costs are estimates and may vary with final numbers, donations, and in-kind support, but we are committed to planning responsibly for a meaningful celebration for all our people.
Targeted Registration Fees – Mokopuna, mapu, and pa metua pay a lower contribution, while Ngati Ingatu adults pay a discounted target fee — well below what was originally proposed, keeping things easier amid the rising cost of living. Registration: mokopuna (0–7) $5, mapu (8–16) $10, mapu (17–21) $40, adults (22–74) $140, pa metua (75+) $5.
Puna/Kopu Contributions – By keeping registration fees low, our collective Puna contributions become all the more important. Each Puna across Rarotonga/Tahiti, Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Auckland, and Brisbane is asked to korero with their families and collectively contribute $500 per month — families contribute together, not individually. A guide is provided to keep this manageable, and we understand circumstances vary, so please korero with your Puna committee if adjustments are needed.
In-Kind Support, Sponsorship & Fundraising – We're gratefully accepting community support. So far, our Auckland Puna has secured the Koru School and Atiu Community Hall at no cost, along with a kind donation for our videos and photography throughout the event. We will also look at fundraising in 2027 and early 2028 to help us reach our income target.
This cost structure has taken into account the feedback from our families, the current high costs of living and fuel, and spreading the costs collectively so that finances are not a barrier.
To support our families through the rising cost of living, we have significantly lowered our registration fee by adopting a low-cost, targeted approach.
To keep registration costs down, we are taking a collaborative approach, with families working together within each Puna to cover our shared reunion expenses.
